How to Decorate Your Home Using Large Art Prints

When it comes to art, consider making a statement by going with a bigger size edition. Why? Because large art prints are an easy way to make an impact in any room. They add a natural focal point to the space, grounding the rest of your furniture and decor with a bold sense of confidence and a sense of luxury.

Because large art prints take center stage, it’s important to choose the right one for your space. In this article, we’ll outline everything you need to know about large art prints — from how to know what piece will work best with your interior design style, to choosing the right size, and how to hang your masterpiece once it arrives.

How to Choose Large Art Prints for Your Room

When it comes to choosing the right large-scale art for your space, the only hard-and-fast rule is to choose a piece that speaks to you. Art is meant to move and inspire — so while we’re going to explore some helpful things to think about when choosing a print, nothing here is written in stone. Instead, pay attention to what excites you and let that lead the way!

  • Get Clear on Your Interior Style. If you’re having trouble understanding where to start when it comes to looking for a large art print, consider your interior design style first. This will be explored more in the next section, but think about what you want your home to look like. If you’re drawn to more traditional spaces, going for an oil painting or sweeping landscape will add some old-world drama to your home. Or, if you prefer more modern design, graphic art or bold photography will likely call your name. To help you find your style, turn to places like Pinterest and Instagram and pay attention to the images you’re drawn too. What type of art do those spaces feature?
  • Consider Your Existing Furniture and Decor. This goes hand-in-hand with understanding your interior design style. Art can be used to contrast or enhance. So, if you want to play up the existing vibe of your space, go for a print that is in the same style as your furniture. Or, you can add an eclectic air to your home by choosing a print that is in the opposite style of your existing decor — think pairing stark pop art with old-world antiques.
  • Pick a Color Palette. The existing furniture and decor that you have in the space where you plan to hang your print is a great place to start when it comes to deciding on the color palette of your art print. You can use your print to tie the various colors of your furniture, floors, walls, and window treatments into a cohesive story, or to add a bold pop of color to a more neutral space.
  • Choose the Material. Minted’s large art prints are available to be printed on either paper or textured canvas. Opting for canvas can add a bit more visual interest to a piece, and is a budget-friendly way to make an oil or acrylic print look like an original. Paper, on the other hand, is perfect for photography and prints you plan to frame behind glass for a sophisticated gallery-like look.
  • Play with Frames. How you choose to mount and frame your large art print can also affect the overall impression it will make on your space. For a cohesive look, you can go for a frame in a similar color to your floor or the other wood tones that already exist in your space. Or, you can go for a colored frame to enhance the impact of a particular hue present within the art. Minted offers frames in 4 different finishes and a variety of mounting styles (including modern float mounting and sophisticated matting) to give your art print a museum quality feel. For a sleeker look of a photography print, you can also opt for aluminum-mounted acrylic finish.
  • Understand Size and Scale. When selecting the right size for your print, first consider where you want it to hang. If you plan to place it above furniture like a couch, bed, or console table, a good rule of thumb is that the art should be between ⅔ and ¾ of the furniture’s length. To better understand how a print might look over your furniture, we recommend using masking tape to map out various sizes to get a sense of what will look best. Learn more about how to choose the perfect size print by checking out our in-depth guide to choosing the right art size.
  • Find the Perfect Placement. When hanging art, there are two rules that most interior designer’s swear by. 1) Art should always be hung at eye level. Typically, this means measuring 60 inches from the center of the art print to the floor. 2) If you are hanging art above furniture, place it 6 inches above the highest point of the furniture. This will help the art feel anchored and integrated into the flow of your space.

Large Art Print Inspiration for Every Aesthetic

Whether you prefer the clean lines of mid-century design or crave cozy bohemian spaces, there are plenty of ways to use art to express your interior design aesthetic. Here are a few of our top tips for the most popular art and decor styles.

1

Mid-Century Modern

If you’re a lover of mid-century modern spaces, you’re likely drawn to playful shapes and clean lines. So lean into this when selecting a large art print for your space! Look for geometric art prints that focus on bold expressions of line and form, abstract renderings of organic shapes, or even playful Slim Aarons-inspired photography. We suggest selecting a frame in a deep walnut or warm wood tone to nod to the mid-century palette, and going for a float mount or full bleed print to keep things feeling graphic and clean. You can also complete the modern feel in your room with black and white art prints.

Minimalist

Because minimalism traces its roots back to the mid twentieth century, minimalist art has many of the same characteristics as mid-century art. Think clean lines, geometric shapes, and lots of negative space. The key difference here is to opt for pieces in a toned-down color palette to pair seamlessly with modern minimalist furniture. Minted offers a curated selection of minimalist art pieces from our talented network of independent artists, and we’re particularly drawn to abstract art that plays with line and texture, slightly out-of-focus photography, and simple line illustrations.

Bohemian

Almost any art style can lend itself to a bohemian space, as the aesthetic is supposed to be an eclectic mix of furniture, decor, and art from different eras and cultures. That said, there are a few general rules to keep in mind to make choosing art for a bohemian space a bit easier. First and foremost, don’t be afraid of color! Look for art prints that are full of rich oranges and reds like this architectural print or a piece that features an unexpected mix of neons and neutrals like this watercolor print. Next, look for travel-inspired photography with a vintage flair, like an overexposed shot of Joshua Tree or retro neon signs. Finally, opt for pieces that are playfully abstract, whether they are line drawings or mixed-media masterpieces.

Rustic & Traditional

If you’re a lover of farmhouse or cottage-core interiors, going for art with a rustic feel is an easy way to tie your space together. When it comes to choosing rustic art, look for pieces that look like they could’ve been unearthed at a vintage market (or, better yet, that have been in your family for generations), like still-life oil paintings of floral arrangements and classic landscapes. You can also opt for pieces inspired by rural life, such as paintings of barns or modern photography of horses, cows, and bison.

Minted’s Large Size Art Prints

Minted's artwork pieces are available in various sizes up to 48" x 70". Our goal is to bring you fine art prints with museum-grade quality to your home. All designs can be printed on a luxe paper or on canvas according to your style preference. Minted also offer aluminum-mounted acrylic art which works especially well for photography prints. You can also select the frame, border, and matting styles for all large-sized art prints. For a more premium finish and easy installation, we recommend getting the non reflective UV-plexi glass and pre-installed hanging hardware with your large art prints.

The final piece of the puzzle when it comes to selecting the right large art print for your home is to consider the orientation of the piece. Here’s what you need to know.

Landscape Orientation

Landscape, or horizontal, orientation is ideal if you’re looking to fill wide stretches of wall or are working with a room with a large footprint. This makes landscape pieces great for living rooms, where they can nicely fill wall space behind couches or above console tables. Minted offers a range of sizes for landscape prints, including 40” x 30”, 54” x 40”, 60” x 44”, and 70 x 48” (the latter two being a perfect fit above large sectionals or king beds), and a variety of frame materials.

Landscape orientation works especially well for art prints featuring sweeping scenery, as it can allow you to feel really immersed in the piece. Opt for a piece available in canvas for a landscape painted in oil or watercolor, or go for luxury paper for photography and acrylic art.

Portrait Orientation

Portrait, or vertical, orientation works well to lend drama to smaller rooms and narrow walls, or to cover a lot of ground in spaces with high ceilings. We love the look of hanging large-scale vertical art prints on stair landings or at the end of a narrow hallway, and offer large vertical prints in a variety of sizes — including 30” x 40”, 40” x 54”, 44” x 60” and 48” x 70” — to fit any space.

The portrait orientation works well for artwork with a single focus (such as a portrait!) as well as for line drawings and geometric-inspired works.

Where to Hang Large Art Prints

Large art prints can work in nearly any room of your home. What orientation you choose can depend on your existing furniture and decor, but here is a quick guide to large art by space.

  • Living Room. Hang large landscape art prints on the wall above your couch or credenza. Vertical art works are best hung above fireplace mantels (unless your mantle is very wide, in which case we’d recommend going for a landscape orientation) or to tie together a reading nook vignette.
  • Dining Room. The right art for your dining space can vary based on the size of your dining room and your interiors style, but we always recommend picking a piece that sparks connection and conversation around the table. Keep in mind that the piece shouldn’t be too attention grabbing, so that the focus of the space remains on social connection.
  • Kitchen. Though much of your wall space in the kitchen will be dominated by cabinetry or open shelving, there is still plenty of space for art! Hanging a large art print above the breakfast nook can help tie it into the bigger space, or you can opt to hang art above the sink if your sink isn’t underneath a window. The one rule of thumb? Avoid canvas pieces in favor of prints that can be placed in plexiglass frames to ensure easy cleanup of any messes.
  • Bedrooms. Bedroom art should be two things: a reflection of the room’s inhabitant (that includes kid-friendly art!) and a reminder to shift into a slower, more relaxed gear. Look for prints in soft, calming tones like blues, greens, and purples, or that help tie in the colors of your bedding with the carpet and existing furniture.
  • Foyer. As your home’s entryway, the foyer is an excellent space to make a statement about your interior style. Large-scale art is one of the easiest ways to do this — hang vertical pieces on narrower walls, and anchor slim sideboards with landscape art in a palette that ties the various spaces of your home together.
  • Hallways & Landings. Hanging large art prints in your hallways and stair landings is a great opportunity to add a bit of personality to often-forgotten spaces. The tall ceilings of landings work well for vertical prints, while landscape prints can be used to add drama to blank stretches of wall in between rooms.

How to Hang Large Art Prints on Your Wall

Once you’ve selected your large art print, it’s time to hang it up! Below is a breakdown of how to hang your print depending on your frame style. Note that because large art can be heavy, it’s ideal to hang your piece on a stud. If the studs in your wall are not located conveniently, we recommend using drywall anchors to help support your piece.

Large Wooden Frames - Corner Brackets:

  • Determine where you’d like the top of your frame to sit. (We recommend using masking tape and a piece of paper cut to the size of your print to help play around with placement.) Measure two inches below that and make a mark on your wall in pencil.
  • Measure the distance between the two arrows on the brackets attached to the back of your frame.
  • Find the mark you made on the wall then measure out the distance between the brackets and mark with pencil.
  • Hammer the hooks into the wall at those two points. Try to keep them as parallel as possible with the brackets, but know that the bracket’s sawtooth design will help adjust for any variance.
  • Hang your piece!

Large Metal Frames - D-Rings:

  • Determine where you’d like your frame to sit on the wall, then mark the wall in pencil at the top center of your piece.
  • To position your nails, turn your art over and measure the distance from the top of the frame to the top of the D-Ring. Then, measure the distance between D-Rings.
  • Apply these measurements to the wall.
  • Pound your nails or hooks into the wall or anchor, leaving a ¼” protrusion.
  • Hang your art!

Canvas Prints - Hanging Wire:

  • Determine where you’d like your frame to sit on the wall, then mark the wall in pencil at the top center of your piece.
  • To position your nails or hooks, measure from the top of the frame to the hanging wire. Note that a large landscape print may require more than one nail to secure it to the wall. If that is the case, divide the width of your piece into thirds to determine how to space out multiple nails or hooks.
  • Measure the same distance on your wall below your first mark. (Make additional marks level with the mark for the hanging wire if necessary.)
  • Secure your nails or hooks into drywall anchors or studs.
  • Hang your piece!

Alternative to Large Art Prints: Art Pairs

Sometimes, two is better than one. Minted’s selection of fine art pairs (or diptychs, in art-industry terms) are perfect for spaces that could use a bit of extra visual interest. Use these pairs, which are typically in a portrait orientation, to anchor a tall ceiling above low-slung furniture like couches and console tables. They also work well for a modern and minimalist-inspired take on the ever-popular gallery wall, and can make a sophisticated statement in a space that could otherwise look cluttered or busy.
